Focus on the dark, gruesome or scatological aspects of British and other Western world history, spanning predominantly from the Stone Age to the post-World War II era.
Charles II : The Power &the Passion
(UK, 2003)
The film covers the life of Charles II - beginning just before his Restoration to the throne in 1660.
Dramatizes both Charles's laziness and frivolous diversion.

The Crown
(US, 2016)
Focus on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II
The first season covers the period from Elizabeth's marriage in 1947 to the disintegration of her sister Princess Margaret's engagement to Group Captain Peter Townsend in 1955.
The second season covers the period from the Suez Crisis in 1956 to the retirement of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1963.
The third season spans 1964 to 1977.
The fourth season spans 1979 to the early 1990s .
The fifth and sixth seasons, which will close the series, will cover the Queen's reign into the 21st century.
Ekaterina
(Russia, 2015)
The series cover the life of the Russian Empress, Catherine the Great.
The first season tells the story of princess Sophie Friederike Auguste, and her rise to power to become Empress of Russia.
The second season portrays the challenges she faces at home and abroad during the early years of her rule, as she tries to revitalise Russia to become one of the great powers of Europe, and becomes titled "the Great".
The third season takes place between the 11th and 12th episode of the second season, from 1774 to 1776.
The Tudors
(UK, 2007)
A historical fiction television series set primarily in 16th-century England.
It is named after the Tudor dynasty as a whole, although it is based specifically upon the reign of King Henry VIII.
Downfall
(German, 2004)
A historical war drama film.
Set during the Battle of Berlin in World War II, when Nazi Germany is on the verge of defeat, and depicts the final days of Adolf Hitler .

Darkest Hour
(UK, 2017)
An account of Winston Churchill's early days as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War and the May 1940 War Cabinet Crisis.
The film well depicts Churchill's refusal to seek a peace treaty with Nazi Germany amid their advance into Western Europe.
Women who made history

A German documentary series.
Entails six stand-alone episodes about six significant women in history.
Among them rulers like Cleopatra, Catherine the Great and Elizabeth I. of England but also Sophie Scholl, Queen Louise of Prussia and Jeanne d’Arc.
